Masking the Self
I hate the masks people wear.
Who will I be today?
When will the real me be realized?
The self that slips through the cracks of the pages of the latest book I’ve picked up.
Or the self I have no choice but to think about while waiting in the doctor’s office, for my turn.
Yea, I remember –
The self I felt the last time the electricity went out and I couldn’t use the computer, TV or stereo.

Never will we find that self, Ourselves
Until we let go of everything and everyone.
Let go, if only for a moment
Of the never-ending noise, stimulation, and computer hum of 2003
The eyes, voices and opinions of pears, loved ones and society.

When we do let go.
In the stillness of our minds we will find self
Then we won’t be distracted by outward stimulus anymore.
Only the inward really counts anyway
Then finally,
We won’t have anyone left to impress.
